What is Dev Deepawali?
Dev Deepawali is celebrated on the full-moon night of the month of Kartik, around fifteen days after Diwali. The ghats are lit with lakhs of earthen lamps and a large Ganga aarti is held.
When is it?
The date changes each year with the Hindu calendar and usually falls in November. Check the date for your year before booking and plan to arrive at least a day earlier.
How to watch it
- From a boat: the most memorable way, but boats sell out weeks in advance.
- From a ghat or rooftop: crowded, but you can walk and see different ghats.
- From a hotel or cafe with a view: book early and confirm the view.
Planning tips
- Book hotels and boats as early as possible.
- Expect roads to be restricted and traffic to be heavy.
- Reach your viewing point well before sunset.
- Dress warmly, as evenings can be cool.
- Carry water and keep valuables secure in the crowd.
